Power Pack (1984-1991) #1 by Louise Simonson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Oh, boy, what can I say about Power Pack #1 that hasn’t already been said in the last thirty-six years? Except that it’s every bit as good now as it was when I read it at eight years old as a back up strip in whatever Marvel UK comic it was reprinted in!
The writing by Lousie Simonson is superb. She introduces us to a family of four kids, brothers and sisters, all with distinct personalities. Some bratty, yes, but none annoying and all immensely likeable (even if Jack is a pain). They’re given powers by a dying alien seahorse man in a bid to save the world and, more importantly, their parents.
The art by June Brigman is 100% perfect for this book. She creates interesting aliens, cool alien technology and the kids all have so much character.
Maybe I’m seeing this through nostalgic eyes, but…seriously…I love this. So much. I’m really looking forward to reading through this whole series. This is the very definition of an all-ages comic. I loved it when I was eight and I still love it now I’m in my forties.
