My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a very solid debut issue, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Pretty much my only criticism is that it was incredibly dense. There’s a LOT here, and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s very text heavy in places. I think that’s an inevitable consequence of having a LOT to set up in this issue. I mean, I think this single issue could have been a mini series in and of itself if written by another writer.

Still, I’m definitely in on this title. It’s great to see Rachel back (although I hope she gets a new code name soon…or just reverts to Phoenix) and her pet war wolf is adorable. Daken is a revelation, and in a book with heavy gay/bi energy, manages to be the gayest mutant in the village…in a book that includes Northstar. It’s kinda wonderful.

Oh, and I absolutely loved the recognition that Lorna has basically never had a personality before, and the essential inclusion of a mission statement that she’d be acquiring one throughout this series was very welcome.
