Empyre: X-Men (2020) #3 by Ed Brisson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Well, this was a bit disappointing after the excellent second issue, but as soon as I saw three writers credited I had low expectations. There’s a LOT packed into this issue, and because of that some of the connective tissue needed to make the story coherent gets lost. For example, at one point the Cuckoos seem to be wearing some kind of plant based armour…it came from nowhere and was immediately discarded. It’s a small thing, but this issue is full of small continuity things which drag you out of the story…along with some clunky dialogue in places.
The big development here seems to be Magik’s new form, and…eh…that was weird and sort of came out of nowhere and will no doubt look completely different in the next issue anywhere…
It’s clear that everyone’s having fun with this, and it seems to have been approached as a big creator jam. But while everything clicked in #2, here it doesn’t quite work.
